Premieres staged at the Bucharest National Opera

The ballet “La Sylphide”, with a choreography signed by Johan Kobborg, and the opera “Rigoletto” directed by Stephen Barlow are among the two major premieres of the new season of the Bucharest National Opera (ONB). After the performances staged in the International Music Festival “George Enescu”, ONB presents the opening of the 2013 – 2014 season on October 17, starting 7.00 PM, with “Othello” by Giuseppe Verdi, the latest premier of the institution.

The new season of ONB promises premiers, famous guests, special events, concerts and recitals, anniversaries of great singers and famous composers, book launching events, meetings and debates, along with educational projects.

In December, choreographer Johan Kobborg, first-dancer of the Royal Ballet Company of Covent Garden, London, the partner of famous Romanian ballerina Alina Cojocaru, will stage the ballet “La Sylphide”, on the music of Herman Severin Løvenskiold. Also in December, ONB will mark the semi-centennial Paul Constantinescu and will bring on stage once again, after several years, “Faust” opera by Charles Gounod, directed by late master Alexandru Tocilescu.

The surprise of 2014 season is represented by “Rigoletto”, directed by Stephen Barlow, one of the most prominent opera directors of the world, with a screenplay by Yannis Thavoris. Other much-awaited shows and events include the ballet “Femei” (“Women”) by Gheorghe Iancu, the premier of “Tosca” featuring tenor Marcello Giordani, and the second edition of the International Canto Contest “Le Grand Prix de l’Opera.” At the same time, the inauguration of the Opera House will be celebrated with the first edition of the Opera Ball. Children can enjoy the “Cinderella” ballet by Sergei Prokofiev, choreographed by Mihai Babuska, the “Puss in Boots” opera by Cornel Trailescu, as well as the numerous theme workshops, courses and other interactive activities specifically designed for them.
