Ponta: Basescu refuses to sign the IMF agreement

Prime-minister Victor Ponta announced that president Traian Basescu told him on the phone on Thursday that he still doesn’t wish to sign the agreement with IMF, but Romania will fulfill its commitments.

As a result, the prime-minister argued, the agreement is in a state of “suspension”.

“He told me he does not want to sigh it. We talked about it on Thursday on the phone. He declined to give me more details. Two things will happen: operationally, we do not have an agreement but in reality we will assume all the obligation regarding the budge deficit, the arrears, everything we talked about. So, we will enforce the agreement even if, bureaucratically, it is in a state of suspension, it can’t enter the board without the president’s signature”, Ponta explained on Romania TV.

He also reiterated that the fuel excise tax hike of 7 euro cents will be introduced for gasoline and diesel in april.

Traian Basescu declared on Monday that he’s waiting for the Government to “send him the draft for the agreement with IMF” to discuss it.
