This year marked the third edition of the Electric Castle festival, an event dedicated to promoting environment friendly behaviours. During the four days of the festival, participants collected separately over 7.5 tons of packaging waste, produced 700 watt-hour (WH) pedalling on bicycles and were constantly involved in environmental education activities.

For the first time in the history of the festival, the organizers have opted for separate collection of packaging waste. Eco-Rom provided special bins where  7.64 tons of waste were collected. Of these, 1,240 kilograms of packaging waste were cardboard / paper, 1,260 kg were plastic packaging waste, 2,500 kg were metal and the largest amount, 2,640 kg were glass packaging waste. All these amounts of waste were transported to recycling companies where they will be converted to other products.

Electric Castle also named as eco-ambassadors the 12 young people who have cycled over 250 km from home to the festival. They came from Chisinau, Bucharest, Timisoara, Galati,Pitesti and Predeal, and cycled a total of 5,421 km, promoting cycling as a transportation means with zero carbon emissions.

Other evens from the festival were “The battle of the pedals”, where 1,000 dynamo bicycles competed and produced together 700 WH, the equivalent of 700 hours of operating a television. There was also the Eco-Game, whose main goal was awareness of the carbon footprint in major sectors (transport, waste, water and energy). Their calculated carbon footprint had an average of 8.2 tons / CO2 / year, exceeding the European average of 7.2 tons / CO2 / year. To neutralize them, every Romanian should plant eight trees annually. The ECO program at Electric Castle festival is coordinated and implemented by MAINOI Association from 2014 onwards.

“It’s great that a festival of this scale makes efforts to educate their young audience towards a more careful approach to environmental issues. I’m seriously considering returning on bicycle to next year’s Electric Castle,” Charlotte Cooper of The Subways, an artist known for her involvement in environmental activities worldwide.
