Online payment by card still faces trust issues

One out of ten Romanians who start an online transaction via card does not complete it, in spite of the fact that trust in this method of payment is on the rise.

The market of online payment by card is deemed to reach 5 million transactions this year, from 3.8 million in 2011, according to data from Netopia mobilPay.

The reasons for which many Romanians do not complete their transactions are diverse and mostly have to do with the customers’ lack of trust in the system or their reluctance to reveal too much of their personal data.

“Most of those we interviewed, 82 percent, have abandoned a transaction invoking personal reasons such as lack of trust in the system of payment, the refusal to reveal personal data or because they mistook the security code CVV2 with the PIN (personal identification number). On the other hand, only 18 percent blamed various technical issues such as the fact that their battery ran out or the internet connection went down,” according to Antonio Eram, CEO of Netopia.

Thus, a survey made by Netopia mobilPay shows that one in five respondents did not complete the order because the sum they had to pay was too large, they did not have money on the card or they simply wanted to see how the system works.

Also, one in ten customers said they did not complete the transaction because they failed to fill in all the necessary fields.

Of those interviewed, 11 percent did not wish to finalize the transaction because they do not trust the system of payment or do not want to introduce personal data, 5 percent wanted to see how the payment can be done and 5 percent said they realized they did not have the card on them and had to abandon the order, 4 percent ran out of battery or internet connection, 2 percent did not know what the CVV2 means and introduced the personal identification number of the card.
