Sorin Grindeanu, the new minister for Information Society, wants to find “the right solutions” for bringing back on the political agenda two sensitive legislation items.
These are the so-called Big Brother law, which refers to the personal data storage, as well as the law regarding the registration of prepay card users and Wi-Fi users, according to Hotnews.ro.
“Both in the data storage law and the prepaid card law there are arguments on both sides and one of the challenges we will have over the next period is to find the right solutionsto guarantee the right to personal security and privacy,” said Grindeanu.
On July 8, 2014, the Constitutional Court decided that Law 82/2012 (ed. note: also known as The Big Brother law) is not constitutional.
Two months later, on September 30, the members of the Supreme Council for the Country’s Defense said a legal intervention is necessary from the Romanian government or parliament to improve Law 82/2012, regarding data storage, as well as Law 111/2011, regarding the registration of prepaid card and Wi-Fi users, under the grounds that there are threats to national security.
