The Nabucco West gas pipeline is a strategic project that spurs sustainable economic development for the beneficiary countries and the region, said PM Ponta on Tuesday, during a political reunion of the Nabucco Committee held in Bucharest.

Representatives of states involved in the gas project pledged expand the scale of the Nabucco West by developing gas interconnections with neighbors in the South and Central-North part of Europe.

“For the region, the development of this project represents an opportunity for development and a chance for energy security; reducing the dependency on a single producer, certainly for Romania and for the whole region, for Europe, represents an major strategic interest,” said the PM.

The Nabucco members signed in Bucharest the Subscription and Shareholders Agreement, which lays the foundation for future cooperation between the Nabucco partners and the Shah Deniz consortium.

Nabucco West is vying with the TAP (the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline) for the Shah Deniz 2 gas field in Azerbaijan. A final decision on the project is due next month.

The Nabucco shareholders are Austria’s OMV, Hungary’s FGSZ, Romania’s Transgaz, Bulgaria’s Bulgarian Energy Holding and Turkey’s Botas.

Romania is a transit country for the pipeline that starts at the Turkish-Bulgarian border and ends in Austria.

The Nabucco pipeline will be on the agenda of the European Council held on May 22 that focuses on the energy sector. PM Ponta will attend the meeting.
