Producing quality applications that add real value to the customer’s experience is an essential point needed for a developer to make a dent on the global market. But there are no hard and fast rules. Martin Wrigley, director of developer services, Orange Group tells BR what consumers of mobile applications want, and even slips in a few bits of advice for Romanian entrepreneurs.

What are the current trends in the development and evolution of mobile?

Development of mobile applications is continuously maturing and we are seeing that the professionalism of developers is increasing. In the past a novel idea and a simple implementation could create a successful application. Now you need the novel idea, a quality designed and developed application fully tested using a good quality assurance scheme and probably an association with a well known brand to ensure success.

What types of applications are the most used by European consumers?

Once you go beyond casual games (the old favorites of card games like poker or arcade games like Tetris, etc.) popular applications tend to provide meaningful mobile access to on-line services, such as Facebook or airline ticketing (British Airways App). Also there are clear trends for social gaming that spring from sites such as Facebook.

There are frequent studies published on the new top apps, and these do change regularly showing that a clear trend is still for new apps and services as well.

Clearly a recipe for success is to produce quality applications that mobilize services to add real value to the customer’s experience.

What advice would you give to a Romanian developer of mobile applications who wants to break through on the global market?

The key is to find quality content with a quality delivery and then to ensure that it is well publicized/marketed. Sadly, there are no magic answers and the image of a quick route to huge success is rare in reality. However there is still good business in applications/games that either hit a novelty aspect or find new useful services for customers. The market is no longer about numbers and flooding app stores with many applications of dubious quality, it is about developing a real service or function that is truly delivered well, be that for business, electronic security, travel, information or entertainment to quote just a few or the many areas of possibility.
