The former head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) George Maior received on Tuesday the approval in foreign affairs reunited committees for the position of ambassador to the US, according to Mediafax.

He stated at the hearings that it is unacceptable for the US to be only the 11th investor in Romania.

George Maior added that it is “an honor and a challenge” to attend these hearings, “given the importance of strategic relations between Romania and the US”, stressing that he discussed the main aspects of his term as ambassador with president Klaus Iohannis, with premier Victor Ponta and with the minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu.

The former director of SRI underscored that the Romanian-American bilateral relations have developed on all levels after the adoption of the Strategic Partnership Declaration, “a central element of Romania’s foreign policy and of security policy”.

Maior also said that during his term “a constant preoccupation” will be the consolidation of the relationship with the Romanian community in the US.

Moreover, Maior said that a major objective will be to continue the demarches on visa abolition, stating that the Strategic Partnership would benefit from Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program.

George Maior said that the 10 topics of the Strategic Partnership Declaration “must be relentlessly deepened, developed in political, strategic dialogue with US authorities”.

President Klaus Iohannis approved on April 30 the proposal to nominate former SRI director George Maior as the US ambassador.
