Dubai-based low cost airline flydubai will operate four direct weekly flights from Bucharest to Dubai starting October 1st, according to Mediafax. Tickets start at EUR 440, all taxes included, and can be bought online starting June 15. Pasengers can travel to Dubai or further on, the company operating about 45 destinations in the Middle East and Asia.
Entering the Romanian market is part of the company’s plan to extend its operations in Eastern and Central Europe with 15 new destinations in ten countries. According to company data, the number of tourists from Eastern and Central Europe on the Dubai airport has gone up by 35 percent in the first four months of 2012.
“This new route proves flydubai’s commitment to expand from the Middle East to new destinations which, unfortunately, over time, did not benefit from enough direct flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). There is a considerable number of Romanian expats worldwide who now have the possibility to visit their families and friends through flight connections via Dubai,” said Ghaith Al Ghaith, the airline’s president, according to Mediafax.
The low cost airline was set up in 2009 and now operates a fleet of 23 Boeing 737-800NGs airplanes to about 45 destinations. The company is state owned and was founded by sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and constitutional monarch of Dubai.
