Party president Klaus Ioahnnis was designated presidential candidate for the liberal party PNL on Monday, according to romaniatv.net.

Iohannis gathered twice as many votes from party members as Crin Antonescu: 110 PNL members voted for the new party president while only 56 voted for the former politician that led the party.

The decision was made after the liberals ordered to opinion polls that clearly showed the voters prefer Klaus Iohannis over Crin Antonescu.

On Monday, Crin Antonescu said that he will not give up the presidential race but he will not run as a independent candidate either. Asked if he will drop the race based on the polls Antonescu replied: “No”.

“Ten days ago I proposed to vote on the matter without any polls. Picking a presidential candidate is a political decision. It must be formalised somehow”, Anonescu said.

He added that nobody asked him to drop from the race but he will not run as a independent candidate.
