Romania has selected Tudor Cristian Jurgiu’s “The Japanese Dog”/”Cainele Japonez” as its entry in the race for the foreign-language film Oscar, writes Variety.

Jurgiu’s feature debut stars Victor Rebengiuc as an old man, Costache Moldu, who has lost his wife and all his possessions in a flood. The tragedy prompts the return of his son Ticu (Serban Pavlu), who has lived in Japan for many years, accompanied by his Japanese wife and son.

Costache becomes a real grandfather to his 7 years old grandson, while Ticu straightens mistakes from the past.

The pic was selected for the Oscar race by a committee that comprising film critics Eugenia Voda, Magda Mihailescu, Cristina Corciovescu, Dana Duma, Irina Margareta Nistor and Iulia Blaga, and Transylvania Film Festival artistic director Mihai Chirilov.

The nominations for the award will be announced Jan. 15 and the awards will be held Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
