With a fortune estimated at EUR 1 – EUR 1.1 billion, Romanian businessman Ioan Niculae has become the wealthiest Romanian, according to this year’s edition of Forbes’ Top 500 Romanian Billionaires. The last entry in the top is a fortune estimated at EUR 6 million.

Niculae has investments in agriculture, chemical industry, energy and tourism. He is the owner of InterAgro.

He is replacing Dinu Patriciu who previously held the title for three consecutive years and whose fortune is estimated by Forbes to have fallen from EUR 2.2 billion in 2011 to EUR 800 – 900 million this year.

The cumulated wealth of the 500 richest Romanians amounts to EUR 21.5 billion, down by EUR 3.6 billion against the previous year. This was mainly generated by the real estate drop.

The average fortune of the top 500 richest Romanians is EUR 43 million. 50 businesswomen are present in the top.
