Holzindustrie Schweighofer to invest EUR 150 mln in a wood working factory in Romania

Austrian Holzindustrie Schweighofer, a wood processing company, will invest EUR 150 million in a wood working plant spanning 70 hectares in the Covasna County that should become operational within 2014.

Around 80 percent of the produced lumber will be exported to Asia, mainly Japan. The new plant has a projected cutting capacity of 800,000cbm, with 70 percent of the produced lumber further processed. The company will use some of the lumber to make glued lam products for the Japanese markets.

The plant will create 650 new direct jobs and another 2,000 in related industries.

The thermal and electrical demand of the plant will be covered by a combined heat and power plant with an installed capacity of 10MW that will be fueled by biomass. Schweighofer will use the heat to dry lumber and produce 100,000 tons of pellets for the European market.

The company is currently looking for local partners to build and operate the plant.
