Here comes the four-day weekend: What to do and where to go

For those lucky enough to have Friday off, Thursday, May 1, will be the start of a four-day weekend. Traditionally, Romanians head for the mountains or for the sea. Here are some of the biggest events in Bucharest and around the country to keep you entertained during the mini-holiday.

Bucharest

Free tour-bus rides

The double-decker buses on the Bucharest City Tour tourist line in Bucharest will re-start operation on May 1, on the same route as in previous years. The kick – off day for the seasonal tourist bus line will also bring free rides for everyone on May 1, between 10.00 and 22.00.

Romanian Dance Showcase, April 28 – May 4, CNDB

Romanian Dance Showcase 2014, one of the most important events of the year in the realm of dance and contemporary performance arts, organized by the Bucharest National Center for Dance (CNDB), will gather 18 shows, 17 foreign guests and 55 already renowned artists and artists at the start of their career for seven days, between April 28 and May 4.

Conceived as an international event to promote Romanian contemporary dance in Europe, the Romanian Dance Showcase wishes to emphasize the dynamic, creativity and versatility of the Romanian contemporary dance scene and create the premises for collaborations and artistic exchanges between Romanian and countries in southeastern Europe.

The curator of the event, Iulia Popovici, stated that the selection of shows presented in the Romanian Dance Showcase did not envisage becoming “a best-of of the dance scene”.

“There are shows that are extremely diverse as approach, as esthetic, as artistic practice. The shows were produced at different times and as such they are the result of different production conditions”, stated Iulia Popovici.

Concerts in  Titan Park, 1-4 May

Loredana Groza will sing for an open-air free-entrance concert in Titan Park, on May, starting at 20:00. The next day, in the same location and the same time frame, you can enjoy a concert by Alternosfera.

The schedule will continue with Holograf on Saturday, May 3, and Smiley on Sunday, May 4.

OtakuFestival, Romanian-American University, May 3-4

Otaku Festival celebrates Japanese pop culture in all its forms: anime, manga, gaming, literature. It is also a perfect way to prepare for the East European Comic-Con which will happen the following weekend. Otaku Festival 2014 will have as main theme cosplay. The organizers have invited famous cosplayers from Europe and Asia to attend the event. The workshops of drawing, animation, cosplay tailoring and others that have already become a tradition are back this year also, along with new ones. The panels will be many and carefully chosen, the gaming aficionados will have, as usual, an area set up exclusively for them, and music will also have a special spot on the list. The event is supported by Cosplay GEN, currently one of the most renowned cosplay publications worldwide, entirely dedicated to the promotion of cosplay as art form.

Romanian Food Fair, Romanian Paesant Museum, May 2-4

Starting Friday, May 2, and until Sunday, May 4, the interior court of the Romanian Peasant’s museum will host a special food fair: “The Romanian Celebration Fair”. Visitors will be able to taste-test special Romanian cheeses, meat products, bio-honey, syrups, local liquors, Romanian cakes, bread in three colors and delicious treats from all over the country. There will also be a grilling section on-site, for hungry travelers who want to taste traditional recipes on the spot.

The fair will be open between 10 and 18.

Sunwaves festival, Mamaia

Sunwaves Festival has reached its 15th edition this year. The festival takes place on the beach, in front of Enigma complex, a well known place in the North of the resort. Among the biggest names that will perform this year are Tale of Us, Ricardo Villalobos, Marcos Carola, Seth Trexlor.

Mogosoaia Classic Fest, Brancovan Palace, April 26 – May 25

For six years now, culture fans have been making an annual pilgrimage to one of the most beautiful landmarks around Bucharest, Mogosoaia Palace, for a top-quality classical music festival that attracts artists from all over the world. This year’s event runs from April 26 to May 25. The holiday weekend will bring you concerts with music by Johann Brahms and a concert from the graduates of the “Road to Fame” program.

International Shakespeare Festival, Bucharest and Craiova, April 23 – May 4

The Romanian International Shakespeare Festival was founded in Craiova, Romania, in 1994, and took place every three years during its first five editions. Since 2006, it has taken place every two years. The Festival also includes seminars and conferences; workshops on acting, directing, design and criticism; film projections of famous performances; symphonic concerts; theater design, painting, photographic, and philatelic exhibitions, as well as theatre book and DVD launches.

Rocker’s Garnic Festival, Garnic, Caras Severin County

Lovers of rock music, nature and movement are invited to the 6th edition of the Rockers’ Garnic Festival. Diamonds are Forever, Days of Confusion, Implant pentru refuz, Subcarpati, Theory of Mind and Partizan will perform.
