The Committee of Eastern Europe Economic Relations, a business association comprising major German companies, met on Thursday with PM Victor Ponta and President Traian Basescu, in a move to explore new investment opportunities on the local market.

Eckhard Cordes, the committee’s president, told President Basescu that foreign investors mulling local investments take into consideration the transparency, the anti-corruption effort, and the availability of qualified staff.

President Basescu described the growing trust of the business environment in the Romanian judiciary, and its role in attracting investors.

PM Ponta told German investors the business relation between the two countries has to further consolidate in order to create new jobs. He added German companies “significantly” contribute to the development of Romania’s economy.

The visit of the German committee comes five months after PM Ponta met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, as well as with German investors willing to open businesses locally.

The German delegation that met Romania’s top political brass included managers of large companies active in the retail, automotive, telecom and banking sectors.

They were joined by the President of Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Romania), Radu Merica, and the German Ambassador to Romania, Werner Hans Lauk.

German foreign direct investments to Romania currently hover around EUR 6 billion, according to government data.
