First depression center to be opened in Romania

The first medical center in Romania dedicated to the treatment of depression and associated disorders for children, youth, adults and elders, with conciliation in Romanian, English or French languages was opened last week in Bucharest.

Depression comes in many forms: it can be a symptom or a disease itself, it can affect us for several weeks or overwhelm us throughout our lives when it is not properly addressed. It can be also a natural, transitory reaction to a significant loss or an inexplicable outburst of sadness and futility which we cannot relate directly to something specific that happened in our lives.

Like all medical conditions, it can turn from a single episode into a lifelong chronic condition, if not timely treated. Most likely, the close ones will notice that we are no longer like we used to be or we could realize ourselves that the old familiar sadness is now more powerful, more furious, more incapacitating than usual. Unfortunately, we cannot treat depression ourselves. But we can have the courage to resort to those who can help and support us, overcoming feeling of fear, shame and guilt.

The development of this specialized center for the treatment of the depression comes as a solution for a well-known problem: at an European level, every year, 1 out of 15 persons suffer from a major depressive episode (7%). If we take into consideration the anxiety disorders and all the depression forms, the statistics raise at 4 out of 15, meaning 27% of the population, according to the World Health Organization.
