European Parliament vetoes ACTA

The European Parliament passed a clear vote against the Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), with 478 deputies against, 39 for and 165 abstentions. The treaty will no longer go into force.

Even though the EP expressed its view against ACTA, the European Commission announced it will send the treaty to the European Court of Justice to see if the treaty breaches European legislation.

The negative vote comes after months of unrest when thousands of people all across the European Union protested against the treaty.

“We hail the vote of the European Parliament which rejected the much controversial ACTA project,” said Dan Nica, Romanian minister of communications, adding that “the voices of teh millions of internet users all across Europe were heard.”
