The European Commission (EC), the executive arm of the EU, approved on Friday a EUR 130 million investment from the cohesion fund to a waste water treatment project around Bucharest.
Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy, said the investment will improve the lives of more than 2 million citizens around Bucharest.
“It will improve the water quality of the Dambovita river and hence be beneficial for the human health of the population. It will also enhance the economic attractiveness of the area for businesses and companies.”
The EU money will be used to develop the waste water infrastructure in Bucharest and in eleven surrounding areas in the Ilfov County. The waste water collection and treatment systems will be expanded, providing full waste water treatment before discharge into sensitive waters.
The investment is part of the stage I of the finalization of the Glina waster water treatment plant and infrastructure, which costs EUR 258 million in total. The overall costs of the projects, which will be deployed in two stages, amounts to EUR 416.5 million.
The project is financed through the Environment sectorial program. Romania has been allotted EUR 19.7 billion in cohesion funds in the 2007 – 2013 period.
