“On the 26th of January 1814, Edmund Kean stepped on stage at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and changed British Theatre forever. But he was no overnight success. He was a grieving, drunken, megalomaniac. He was poetry in motion”, says the official press release of this awarded and acclaimed theatre performance.
The Tragedian will be staged on August 30 as part of Undercloud festival, promising “a story that seems very familiar because of today’s celebrities,” as performer/writer Alister O’Loughlin explains. Combining both the physical theatre and storytelling traditions that Kean sprang from in a uniquely intimate relationship with the audience the complete Tragedian Trilogy is more than a performance, it is a theatrical event.
In order to accurately portray Kean, O’Loughlin undertook a condensed study of tumbling, fencing, pugilism (19th Century Boxing), ballet (“The hardest of all”) and singing. Kean was a well-known all-rounder before finding fame as leading actor, notes the official press release.
Undercloud theatre festival is celebrating nine years of existence this year. The International Independent Theatre Festival happens August 22-31 in Bucharest, while proposing tens of performances and cultural events from Romania and abroad. This year, besides the Romanian performances, the festival brings six theatre productions from six various cultures. Shows from UK, France, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Russia and Israel will be performed on the Arcub Gabroveni stages.
