Victor Ponta and Dan Sova were indicted in the case prosecuted by the National Anti-corruption Agency (DNA) and part of Ponta’s property will be seized, according to Mediafax.

DNA has started criminal action against Victor Ponta, changing his status from suspect to indicted, though he is not under judicial control. In this context, investigators decided for the seizure on part of Ponta’s property. Investigators will identify movable and immovable property, bank accounts and other valuables or apartments in order to seize part of them, summing up the damage found in the investigation.

Victor Ponta has not issued a statement to DNA, the PM using his right to silence.

Ponta is prosecuted for forgery of private documents, complicity in tax evasion and money laundering offences committed a lawyer. When exiting the DNA, where he stayed for about 30 minutes, he said he did not file a declaration and that the hearings will start in August. The term was set in order for the accounting and financial expertise to be completed. No details on the objectives of this expertise were given

Asked if he will resign as prime minister, Victor Ponta replied: “Don’t you want to do politics elsewhere, not in front of the DNA? I’ll see you in Parliament.”

On June 5 Victor Ponta was prosecuted for forgery of private documents, complicity in tax evasion and money laundering. DNA asked the Chamber of Deputies to approve the prosecution, but the request was rejected by the deputies on June 8.

On June 14, when the hearing was set to start, he was hospitalized at the University Hospital in Istanbul, and a day later his left knee was operated on. After discharge from the hospital, Ponta decided to stay in Turkey for the recovery treatment, returning to the country on July 8, after an absence of nearly a month. During this time his lawyer, Loredana Radu, went to the DNA several times to study the case.

The prime minister said when he was in Turkey that he will go to the DNA on the first day of his return in the country. However, upon his return, the PM only made a visit to the Government and asked the President to take note of the resumption of his work, “given the fact that the causes which generated the impossibility of exerting his duties of prime minister were removed”.

Five days after returning to the country, Ponta announced through a letter to the leaders of the Social Democrats and posted on Facebook on Sunday evening, the decision to step down from PSD until the legal issues have been cleared.
