China National Electric Engineering Construction Corporation will handle the refurbishment of the Deva thermal power plant under a USD 271 million contract that will be signed on Monday, reports Mediafax newswire.

The contract will be signed by Aurel Niculescu, general manager of Huneadoara Energy Complex, and Xiu Chunsheng, president of the board of the Chinese company.

Romanian officials have invited Chinese companies to develop extensive projects in the energy sector, during a 3-day official visit undertaken by Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta in China.

Romania is in the process of decommissioning large state-owned power generators deemed too inefficient that are using primarily fossil fuels. At present, the government is courting Chinese companies to develop new nuclear, hydro and renewable energy capacities.
