In honor of Women’s Day (March 8), Business Review puts the spotlight on successful Romanian women in business. What makes them tick, what are some of their management secrets and what insight can they share with young women that are just starting out in the world of business.

Today we are talking with Alina Silvestru, Channel Marketing Director, Epson Romania and Bulgaria.

How did you choose your career?

Before I arrived at marketing and distribution, my professional trajectory passed through different domains, from journalism to quality management to public relations. I believe the diversity of these fields helped me gain the ability to adapt very easily in any situation connected to my work and also to empathize with the people I’m addressing, whether they are partners, clients or the target audience for our marketing actions. I’ve been attracted to marketing and advertising since I was a child and I have remained until now one of those people that never changes the channel when commercial breaks come on.

How would you describe your management style/work ethic?

I care very much about fairness and I believe in our evolving capacity to learn from those around us and perfect in our field. I’m always looking to gather around me responsible people that I can rely on, while at the same time counting on them to be flexible, open to new things, talkative and relaxed, good team players.

How do you achieve a balance between your personal and professional life?

I haven’t started a family yet so it is easy for me to adapt to greater demands from the office, but I care about my free time which I spend with my friends, going to concerts, travelling. Furthermore, my job requires me to appreciate life beyond the office, to understand people’s needs and aspiration, to look for new and original ideas.

What are some of the main female role models in your life?

I don’t really believe in role models, but there have always been women in my life that have inspired me, in a smaller or bigger capacity from one moment to another. I would start with my mother, a beautiful and balanced person.

Have there been moments in your career when you were underestimated? If so, how did you react?

I don’t really remember being underestimated, but when I wanted something I always managed to get there.

A piece of advice for Romanian women looking to start a business or begin a career?

They should always have faith in their capacity to succeed, regardless of what they want to do.
