Can Romania turn its strays into guide dogs? The Government will pay for it

The Government will finance training programs for guide dogs, according to the new Law of protection for people with disabilities that was adopted Tuesday.

Claudia Boghievici (PDL), former Minister of Labor,  initiated the changes made to Law 448/2006. According to the press release, the changes were approved by the Senate in November 2013 and today they passed through the Chamber of deputies.

>According to the new text, the Ministry of Labor, Family and Social protection will finance national programs for training guide dogs that would go on and assist people with visual disabilities.

“We made this proposal knowing that people with visual disabilities have trouble being included in society. The EU already has programs like this, that help people with a vision problem get out of the house and move around”, Boghievici said in the press release.

According to studies, people with a visual impairment that are aided by seeing eye dogs are twice as independent as those without one.

That’s why we considered it is important to support these people, to have a national program where people with visual impairments can benefit from these dogs. (…) Maybe we could even the dogs in shelters a noble purpose“, according to the press release.
