Rigoletto

May 7, from 19.00

After 60 years of the same setup, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto will be staged at the Bucharest National Opera in a new production of this opera, signed by the famous Australian director Stephen Barlow and by Greek artist and stage designer Yannis Thavoris. The play conducted by Cristian Sandu will present on stage a cast including artists from the U.S., Italy, Russia, ONB soloists and guests from other Romanian cities. The new stage of Rigoletto presents the Duke as Al Capone, while Rigoletto is a private entertainer of the Duke, who is involved in the business of funeral rites.

Le corsaire, Adolphe Charles Adam

Le Corsaire is a ballet typically presented in three acts, with a libretto originally created by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges loosely based on the poem The Corsair by Lord Byron. Under the wand of Ciprian Teodorașcu, Cristina Dijmaru (Medora) and Robert Enache (Konrad) are interpreting the performance.

Swan Lake Ballet

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet Swan Lake is brought to life on the Bucharest National Opera stage with the graceful choreography of Gheorghe Iancu, after a break of five years.

A principal dancer of the Bucharest National Opera, Iancu left Romania in 1986, and gained international recognition as a classical ballet dancer in Italy, where he met the famous ballerina Carla Fracci. His international career includes performances at Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Covent Garden in London, Bolshoi Theatre in Moskow, Berlin Opera, Arena di Verona, Rio de Janeiro Opera, Gran Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Tokio and Osaka Opera Houses. La Sylphide

May 15, from 19.00

Choreographer Johan Kobborg, first-dancer of the Royal Ballet Company of Covent Garden, London, the partner of famous Romanian-born ballerina Alina Cojocaru, will stage the ballet ‘La Sylphide,’ on the music of Herman Severin Løvenskiold.

Don Giovanni

May 16, from 19.00

Based on the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer, “Don Giovanni” is the latest performance of the Bucharest National Opera, which has had the premiere on February 17. Under the wand of Vlad Conta, Mozart’s characters are represented by Don Giovanni – Daniel Pop, Il Commendatore – Marius Boloș, Donna Anna – Simona Neagu, Don Ottavio – Liviu Iftene, Donna Elvira – Crina Zancu, Leporello – Cătălin Ţoropoc.

La Traviata

May 17, from 19.00

Under the wand of Vlad Conta, the libretto of Francesco Maria Piave comes alive for the public.

Lohengrin

May 23, from 19.00

The performance is in German, with translation in Romanian, and the acting is presented under the wand of Myron Michailidis, who is a special guest of the Opera House for this show.

Le NOZZE di FIGARO

May 24, from 19.00

The Bucharest National Opera offers an opera buffa (comic opera) performance, composed in 1786 in four acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a libretto in Italian by Lorenzo Da Ponte, based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, “La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro” (1784). The orchestra is conducted by Vlad Conta.

Madame Butterfly

May 29, from 19.00

Giacomo Puccini’s opera in three acts “Madame Butterfly” is staged under the wand of Adrian Morar, while the butterfly is interpreted by special guest Li Keng.
