Former tennis player Ion Tiriac, now owner of the biggest chain of car dealerships in Romania, and one of the country’s richest men, puts part of his 250 strong classic car collection on show in Bucharest from 29 November. Probably the most valuable is this 1952 Rolls-Royce Phantom IV (in picture), built originally for the Aga Khan on the understanding it wouldn’t ever be sold (just 18 Phantom IVs were built, all for heads of state or royalty, estimated at EUR 1.5 million).

Sixty five of Tiriac’s cars will be on show at any one time, rotated every three months, at a showroom in Otopeni, just north of Bucharest. Other famous marques include Bentley, Mercedes, Morgan and Ferrari. The oldest dates from 1899.

Tiriac, who controls the car importers for Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover, Hyundai, and also sells Ford and Mercedes Benz through its Tiriac Auto centers in Romania, is passionate about cars.

Tiriac’s collection is four times bigger than what will be showcased in Bucharest, and the items exhibited will be changed once every three months. Tiriac gathered the rare cars after taking part in international bids, thus completing his 250-car collection, which includes brands such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Mercedes, Morgan and Ferrari.

His collection includes the six Phantom cars produced since the 60s, including the Phantom 4 which had been sold only to royals. Among the most valuable are the York Duchess’ former Rolls Royce and a Mustang which Tiriac bought at an auction in 1969. All of the cars, on display starting November 29, are functional and are maintained by a specialized team.

The car collection is located in the former Metro Otopeni platform in the Northern part of Bucharest.
