Basescu, on Schengen: Something MUST happen this year

President Traian Basescu met with Herman Von Rompuy on Thursday in Bruxelles to discuss joining the Schengen area, the Republic of Moldova joining the EU, as well as the development of the natural gas south pipe.

“Schengen was a very important topic to breach and I set as an objective that Romania take the first steps towards Schengen this year. Let’s start the integration process, even in steps, like we’ve already discussed”, the President explained.

Asked if the president of the Europea Council made any actual commitments, Basescu replied: “Von Rompuy is not the problem. We must work together in order to insure something happens by the end of the year. We can not stumble every time somebody makes a declaration or every time a group in the Parliament gets an idea”.
