The net average salary in Romania was RON 1,866 (approximately EUR 420) in December, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). This was up by 7.1 percent (RON 123) compared to the previous month and 6 percent y-o-y.

The average salary increased in most industries in December compared to November due to “the granting of occasional bonuses (including quarterly, annual or holiday bonuses), other funds (including meal and gift tickets), and production achievements or higher receipts (depending on contracts). Also, the increases of the average net earnings were determined by layoffs of employees with lower earnings, in certain economic activities,” reads the INS press release.

The highest average salary levels this December were reported in the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas industry (RON 5,802) while the lowest (RON 1,061) was reported in the hospitality and food services sectors.
