Business advocacy group AmCham Romania has launched the pilot edition of the Become a Leader program that aims to expose students to the corporate culture through a job shadowing system.

A jury comprising AmCham members selected 11 students that will spend two weeks as interns in two partner companies. They will attend board meetings and observe the daily routine of heads of large multinational companies including Microsoft and HP.

“This is a leadership program that aims to expose the youth to the corporate culture, allowing them to shadow CEOs and top managers,” said Anca Harasim, executive director at AmCham.

The finalists have been selected from a pool of more than 225 students across the country. They had to submit their CVs along with an essay on Leading in Romania. The final stage of the recruitment process was the face-to-face interview with representatives of the participating companies.

Vlad Bog, HR country lead at Microsoft, said the purpose of the program is not necessarily to retain the best talent, but to make the youth hirable.

The participating students will receive a EUR 500 scholarship and will be involved in AmCham activities. At the end of the internship, each student will submit a paper expressing their vision about Romania in the next five to ten years.

Harasim said AmCham aims to expand the program next year by attracting more companies, which should also increase the number of interns.

The AmCham members involved in this project are Citibank, Dentons, Ernst & Young, HP, Junior Achievement, Microsoft, PwC, Raiffeisen Bank, UPC. It was sustained by AchiveGlobal, Intel Corporation, General Electric and Oracle. PRAIS Corporate Communications handled the identity and promotion of the program.
