The first section of the future Timisoara-Lugoj highway in western Romania was opened to traffic this Tuesday. The 9.5km section connects Timisoara to Remetea Mare and was delivered six months in advance, making it a first in the history of modern highway building in Romania.
“To our knowledge this is the first highway section delivered in advance. Works should have been completed in 18 months but instead it took 12 months. The section is fully operational and the speed limit is 130km/h,” said Ioan Ambrus the director of the Timisoara Roads and Bridges Regional Directorate, according to Mediafax.
No government officials took part in the opening event.
The construction of the 9.5 km highway section cost RON 210,396,462 (VAT not included) – approximately EUR 47 million. Out of this, some RON 178 million (approximately EUR 40 million) were EU funds. The consortium of companies responsible for building the 9.5km section is made out of SC Spedition UMB SRL, SC Tehnostrade SRL and Carena SpA Impresa di Construzioni.
The entire Timisoara-Lugoj highwas will have a length of 35 km and will cost RON 1.4 billion (approximately EUR 316 million). It will be part of the Pan-European Corridor IV which will connect Dresden to Istanbul.
