Romania’s net coal production totaled 2.05 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first six months of 2018, a 9.3 percent lower figure than the same period of 2017, according to data from the National Institute for Statistics.
In the same period, Romania imported 225,300 tep coal, a 24.8 percent higher quantity compared to the first six months of last year.
According to the Energy Strategy project published by the Energy ministry, Romania has total reserves of 12.6 billion tonnes of lignite (brown coal), which are geographically concentrated around the Oltenia Mining Reservoir. Deposits currently in exploitation go up to 986 million tonnes.
Hard coal reserves, found mostly in the coal reservoir in the Jiului Valley, total 2.2 billion tonnes, of which 592 million tonnes are in exploitation.
