Producing one cubic meter of cement consumes 1,000 times more energy than a regular TV

To produce a cubic meter of cement, it takes almost 1,000 times more energy than to keep a regular TV in operation. The cement industry consumes a huge amount of energy and leaves behind considerable amounts of carbon emissions because it needs extreme temperatures to produce cement.

For example, to produce a cubic meter of cement requires 2,770,000 million joules, the unit that measures energy, while a television only needs 3,000 joules to operate, which means a consumption of almost 1,000 times more. Moreover, globally, 33% of energy consumption is attributed to large industries, including cement, and the cement industry is responsible for 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions.

In this context where the huge energy consumption of cement production generates carbon dioxide emissions, players in the cement industry are looking for solutions to reduce carbon emissions, but also to make the transition to alternative fuels, replacing the traditional fossil ones. In addition, simultaneously with the use of alternative fuels, the transition to clean, green energy sources is made, in order to reduce the impact of the industry on the environment. Solar panels or wind farms are examples of such alternatives. Copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and other minerals, called critical minerals, are absolutely essential to create these clean, green technologies.

The cement industry in Europe has set out to become carbon neutral by 2050, by rethinking the operational and production model of cement, but above all by incorporating in its processes new solutions and technologies that could reduce up to 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions generated by cement production. All these solutions will be debated during the international conference “CarbonZero – Alternative Fuels & Raw Materials” which will take place in Lisbon next week, the event being organized by a Romanian company.

The CarbonZero Conference puts on the map a complex approach to alternative fuels and recycled raw materials

“CarbonZero – Alternative Fuels & Raw Materials”, the international conference that debates the latest solutions and technologies for reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the cement and construction industry, takes place next week in Portugal and brings together decision-makers from companies producing cement, equipment and technology manufacturers, academics as well as innovation, research, development and environment professionals.

HeidelbergCement (Germany), Holcim (France), Titan Cement (Greece), Votorantim Cimentos (Brazil), Cementos Argos (Colombia) or Dalmia Cement (India) are just some of the most influential companies joining this year’s CarbonZero conference and which will focus on identifying the best green solutions for the cement industry. The subject of the conference is the reduction of carbon emissions through the use of alternative fuels in the production of cement, especially municipal residues, biomass, multi-industry waste, but also through recycling, by recirculating residues from the cement manufacturing process, construction waste or the invention of new, non-polluting materials,” says Beatrice Bildea-Ene, Managing Director Industry Link, the company that organizes the event.
