The Recolamp association – an NGO which was set up by General Electric, Osram Romania and Philips Romania in 2007 – has collected and recycled 150 tons of lighting equipment in 2011, up 65 percent y-o-y.
Last year, 135 lighting equipment manufacturers have passed their obligation to manage the resulting waste to Recolamp. At the end of 2011 the NGO managed 7,400 collecting sites. “Based on a partnership between the association and private and state-owned companies, we offer them special containers to deposit the burnt equipment and when these containers are full they can all us at a free number and we send an authorized collector to get the waste,” said Bela Kovacs, general manager of Recolamp Romania.
Not many Romanians are aware of the importance of collecting lighting equipment waste separately. Only 32 percent of the collecting sites send waste to Recolamp, said Kovacs, adding that the NGO will continue to invest in information campaigns.
The collected waste is recycled and 95 percent of what results is reused by the industry.
