The Romanian subsidiary of GDF Suez entered the renewable segment through the acquisition of a wind project from real estate developer Belrom, in Gemenele locality, Braila County.

The project has all the permits and authorizations, including the technical contract for connection to the national grid.

The park will have an installed capacity of 48 MW, powered by 21 turbines of 2.3 MW each, which will be bought from Siemens. GDF expects to start producing electricity by end-2012.

“Through the acquisition of this project, GDF Suez Energy Romania has finalized a new stage of its development in Romania. The building of our first wind park expresses our trust in Romania’s renewable energy potential, and will consolidate our position in the energy market,” said Eric Stab, executive president GDF Suez Energy Romania.

Law firm Salans assisted GDF Suez in connection with drafting and negotiation of various agreements, including the sale-purchase agreement of the project company and the purchase agreement for wind turbines.

Salans’ team was coordinated by Claudiu Munteanu-Jipescu, partner and head of the Energy Practice Group and included Bogdan Papandopol, Octav Stan and Madalina Trifan.

GDF Suez supplies natural gas to 1.3 million customers in Romania, but also handles natural gas distribution through its subsidiary Distrigaz Sud Retele. The company has been supplying electricity for business clients starting 2009.
