Moxy and The Marmorosch, two hotels that become a reference point in the Romanian tourist landscape

CUMULUS has completed the conversion into a hotel of two buildings on Doamnei Street, Moxy Bucharest Old Town – opened in the summer of 2020 – with a design that combines exuberance and comfort and The Marmorosch Bucharest – opened in August 2021 – a hotel under the Autograph Collection brand, which is imposed by the historical heritage and the lush atmosphere. The two involve a total of 336 rooms.

The collaboration with Apex Alliance, under which we designed and arranged a total of four reference hotels for Bucharest, each with a well-defined public and specific, was a challenge, being one of the largest projects of CUMULUS in the last 3-4 years. Moxy and The Marmorosch, the most recently opened, are probably the most popular, being located in the old town and a challenge in that they have already worked on existing buildings, unlike the Courtyard and Hilton Airport Garden Inn which were built by at zero, said architect Ivona Amariței, Senior Partner CUMULUS.

Rehabilitating and completely transforming a 61-year-old building, Moxy Bucharest Downtown surprises today with its effervescence and color. The concept from which CUMULUS started integrated elements from the popular ballad “Miorița”, reinterpreted in a current language by the artist Milos Jovanovici. The components of the design, the chic industrial style, the playful spirit expressed by the contemporary-urban pieces of furniture and the overlapping of textures, colors and materials make Moxy a perfect destination for digital storytellers.

“Moxy was an important project for us at CUMULUS. We brought together the rigor, the requirements of the developer with the design, the unmistakable playful style and the standards of a vibrant brand like Moxy. We are proud to have designed the first Moxy hotel in Romania, which, one year after its opening, confirms that it is a successful concept “, said architect Eliza Yokina, CUMULUS Senior Partner.

A few steps away, also on Doamnei Street, the CUMULUS team together with 57 other specialists restored the brilliance of an emblematic building for the Capital of the 20th century. The Marmorosch, a class A monument, thus became the first hotel opened under the Autograph Collection brand in Romania. The restoration process was a difficult and challenging one, most of them due to the responsibility of the building’s heritage. The interior design reflects the interwar period, and every inch is restored or reconditioned. The total budget for this project through Apex Alliance Hotel Management was 42 million euros.

“Marmorosch Blank is the private bank that was the foundation of modern Romania, the monument building being of a unique stylistic value for Bucharest. The conversion and restoration project in The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection is about bringing back to the public circuit a historical heritage that we can be proud of, to open to the city an abandoned, forgotten building and to create a reference point on the emotional map of the city”, said architect Adrian Soare, Senior Managing Partner of CUMULUS.

CUMULUS ‘challenges were to adapt the building to the operational safety and fire safety requirements in force in Romania, as well as to the strict standards of the Autograph Collection by Marriott brand for a premium hotel, while preserving all the existing valuable elements. As a result, 45 different types of hotel rooms – from the new building with rooms reinterpreted in a contemporary note, to the 7 rooms with historical load and the spectacular presidential apartment arranged on the site of the former director’s office. The 217 rooms designed by YES Design, are providing a unique experience for The Marmorosch hotel guests.
