Vila Sipot on the Peles Royal Domain, Closer to Reentering Romania’s Cultural and Touristic Circuit

Vila Sipot, also known as the “Architects’ House,” part of the Peles Royal Domain and the birthplace of the Peles Castle project in Sinaia, is making significant progress in its renovation and consolidation works started in the middle of last year. One of the most special works is the completion of the stained glass windows portraying the architects of Peles Castle, which will be installed in the future Gallery of Peles Architects.

These stained glass windows represent an element of distinct architectural value, directly associated with the identity of Romanian royalty, and their restoration has been an extremely important component in the construction consolidation process, initiated by the Peles Royal Heritage Association. After the completion of the works, scheduled for the end of this year, the monument building will be reintegrated into Romania’s cultural and touristic circuit.

Among the main objectives of the restoration project is the opening of the Peles Architects Gallery within Vila Sipot, a unique exhibition space dedicated to the architects who built and developed the Peles Royal Domain in Sinaia, following the vision of King Carol I, from the initial plans of Peles Castle to the entire architectural and landscape ensemble that exists today.

The restoration works of Vila Sipot, estimated to cost over half a million euros, are being carried out entirely through the efforts of the Peles Royal Heritage Association, with authorization from the Ministry of Culture, and are exclusively funded and logistically supported by private sponsors.

“By rehabilitating Vila Sipot and reintegrating it into the touristic circuit, we are undertaking the greatest effort to conserve, restore, and develop the historical, architectural, and natural heritage of the Peles Royal Domain over the past 60 years. We extend an open invitation to all those who understand the importance of this project for Romania – individuals or companies – to contribute through donations or sponsorships, thus joining the efforts to protect Romania’s architectural and historical heritage. Equally, I thank all those who have already chosen to partner with us in this endeavor,” declared Ion Tuca, Executive Director of the Peles Royal Heritage Association.

The main partners that have made the restoration of Vila Sipot possible up to this point are: Herlitz Romania, Veolia Romania, TIAB, Transgaz, Romgaz, Distributie Energie Electrica Romania, Romstal, Warga Enayati, Centrul Medical Unirea, Akzonobel, BAT Romania, DentalMed, Vial Numis, Steel Business Profiles, Impact Developer & Contractor, Fresh Air, Wienerberger, CEC Bank, and Banca Comerciala Romana – Official Partner 2023.

Within the restoration project, the construction consolidation works have been completed, as well as the replacement of thermal and electrical sanitary installations, and the reconstruction of the structural elements of the space that will be dedicated to the Peles Architects Gallery.

Following the model of great historical monuments worldwide, Vila Sipot will subsequently be valorized by opening it as a tourist attraction, a multifunctional space for events, an inspirational workspace for young architects, or other creative professions.

Vila Sipot served as the workspace and residence of the Czech architect of the Royal House, Karel Liman, during the activities of designing the extensions and arrangements of Peles Castle, which he brought, in the early 20th century, to the form that we know today. According to historical documents, King Carol I himself made frequent visits to the architectural office to oversee the design and implementation of his requirements.

The building is located in the Peles Stream valley and constitutes, together with the access path to Pelisor Castle, the western side of the Sinaia domain, near Economat.

All renovation works are carried out by specialists authorized by the Ministry of Culture for historical monuments. The team of coordinating specialists for the project includes Eng. Mihai Biris – Structural Designer, Arch. Smaranda Baciu – General Designer, Arch. Matei Badea – Designer, Arch. Elena Iordache – Designer, Eng. Marilena Malai – Site Supervisor, Eng. Constructor Catalin Buliga, as well as specialists from UAU “Ion Mincu,” USAMV Bucharest, and UTCB.

The Peles Royal Heritage Association is the only non-governmental and non-profit entity created with the mission of protecting, conserving, restoring, and enhancing the historical, architectural, artistic, and landscape heritage of the Peles Royal Domain as a key element of Romania’s culture, tourism, and identity in the world. By revaluing this heritage, APRP promotes the historical culture and values of Romania both domestically and internationally.
