The Brand Defender Association for the Defense of Intellectual Property Rights Holders announces the Top 10 Brand Owners in Romania.

The top was created in accordance with the applications submitted in the last 10 years to the EUIPO – the European intellectual property office that analyzes and issues certificates valid for all 27 EU states – and OSIM – the office that legally covers only the territory of Romania from the point of view of validity certificates, which means they cannot be used in other states.

The top 10 owners of registered trademarks in Romania hold a vital position in the business landscape, they own a total of 1347 registered trademarks at OSIM. Their commitment to trademark protection reflects their commitment to quality, innovation, and trust. Moreover, obtaining certificates not only helps to protect the interests of the holding companies, but also contributes to the development of a competitive and reliable market, encouraging innovation and enabling international expansion. Brands, in this context, are not only legal assets, they are symbols of business values that lead to Romania’s economic growth and development.

Biofarm, ranked first in the Top 10 OPSIM brand owners in Romania, has in its portfolio names well known to Romanians: Carmol, Triferment, Cavit and Colebil. The story of Carmol is almost 100 years old, it was put on the market in 1928 and protected as a trademark in 1978.

EUIPO and OSIM are the two offices that Romanian companies turn to when they obtain the certificates that protect their brands. There is also a third institution, WIPO, the world intellectual property organization, which, however, issues certificates only on behalf of national member offices.

“The procedures of these offices basically follow the same rigors, especially since 2015, when Directive (EU) 2015/243 appeared on the approximation of the laws of the member states regarding trademarks. The companies’ option for one or the other of the offices depends only on the decision to extend or not the brand in other countries, given that OSIM is for Romania and EUIPO is valid for all of Europe. For companies, the costs of registering a trademark are not a criterion, the most important thing is that the trademark is filed correctly, as the offices do not check this aspect, which is the responsibility of the applicant,” says Radu Bozocea, partner at Weizmann Ariana & Partners, the intellectual property agency in Romania that represents most national companies for trademark registration.

The brand is a private property of the company that registered it, can be sold, rented, or valued, generates reputation and is the basis of the company’s sales strategy. The value of a brand is given by the revenue it can attract on its own, regardless of the company that owns it.

“For any company, protecting the brand should be a primary concern, because a trademark is more than just a logo or a name, it is a symbol of a company’s reputation, quality and trust. And consumer trust is the cornerstone of any successful brand.” completes Radu Bozocea.
