Romanians spend less than most other Europeans on housing

Romanians spent last year 22.5 percent of their total consumption expenditure on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, a share significantly lower than those seen in most western European countries, Eurostat data show.

In 2017, households in the EU spent over EUR 2,000 billion – equivalent to 13.1 percent of EU’s GDP, on “housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels”.

This represents 24.2 percent of their total consumption expenditure and is by far the EU’s largest household expenditure item, ahead of transport (13 percent), food and non-alcoholic beverages (12.2 percent), restaurants and hotels (8.8 percent) as well as recreation and culture (8.5 percent).

Of all household expenditure main items, housing was the item that saw the most significant increase in spending over the last decade, rising from a share of 22.7 percent of total household expenditure in 2007 to 24.2 percent in 2017.

In Romania, expenditure on housing rose from 22.3 percent of total consumption expenditure in 2007 up to 22.5 percent in 2017.

Finland, Denmark and the United Kingdom spend highest share of household expenditure on housing, Malta spends least.

In the vast majority of EU Member States, “housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels” represents the most substantial item of household expenditure.

In 2017, the share of household expenditure devoted to housing was largest in Finland (28.8 percent), Denmark (28.7 percent) and the United Kingdom (26.7 percent), followed by France (26.2 percent), Sweden (26.1 percent) and Czechia (25.4 percent).

At the opposite end of the scale, Malta (10.1 percent), Lithuania (14.8 percent) and Cyprus (15.4 percent) spent the lowest share of their household expenditure on housing.

Romania ranks 15th out of 28 member states in terms of share of housing expenditure in consumption expenditure.

In 2017, Romanians spent EUR 25.8 billion on housing, according to Eurostat.
