The new passenger car registrations in Romania rose by 25.4 percent year-on-year in the first four months of this year, to 36,272 units, according to data published on Thursday by the European auto industry association ACEA.

Romania posted the third-fastest growth rate among the 28 EU member states in the first four months, after Hungary (+32.2 percent) and Greece (+26.1 percent), but remains a small market for car manufacturers – the 18th out of 28 EU member states, ACEA data show.

In the first four months of 2018, Romania was a smaller market for carmakers than Hungary (43,664 new car registrations), Portugal (84,659) and the Czech Republic (92,132), countries which have about half the population of Romania.

New car registrations in Romania rose 14.9 percent year-on-year in April, to 7,629 units, according to ACEA.

Overall, 5.48 million new cars were registered in the European Union during the first four months of 2018.
