Cristina Hanganu, communication and CSR director of Lidl Romania, says that for the retailer, sustainability is part of its DNA.
Hanganu explained that Lidl owns morethan 225 stores in Romania, so the company had been trying to make them more sustainable and efficient even before the retailer had a sustainability strategy.
”Our systems help us to avoid buying more than we need in our stores in order to reduce food waste,” said Hanganu, during BR’s Environmental and Sustainability Summit.
Speaking about the measures to combat food waste, she explained that Lidl donates products close to the end of their shelf life to organisations that can distribute them to people in need.
“Food waste isn’t an area for competition with other retailers – we want to work together to reduce food waste,” she added.
