Nicolae Grigorescu’s painting ‘Country girl with white kerchief’ (Tarancuta cu basma alba) was sold for EUR 350,000, a lot more than the initial estimate of EUR 50,000 – 90,000. The auction was held by Artmark in the Autumn Auction event and the painting became the highest-selling ever out of Grigorescu’s works. The painting was a part of a former Supreme Court judge’s collection.

Grigorescu remains at the top of the best-selling Romanian artists, having established another record for the art market in December 2016 (with Fountain Peasants – Tarancute la fantana, EUR 320,000).

The Autumn Auction saw total sales of EUR 1.64 million and an 81 percent bid, which shows an organic growth of investor interest in the Romanian art market.

“The Year of the Centenary also becomes the year of Grigorescu,” says the press release of Artmark.
