Liviu Dragnea revisits idea of corporate turnover tax, asks government for “serious measures against banks’ greed and ROBOR growth”

During his speech at the Social Democratic Party’s National Council on Sunday, party leader Liviu Dragnea launched a series of attacks against multinational companies, especially those in energy and telecommunications, as well as banks, and spoke once again about the idea of introducing a tax on their turnovers.

“We need a government, a coalition, to tell both banks and multinationals in Romania that this country has the right to ask them to pay the taxes they owe for the huge profits they make here, not in fiscal paradises or in their home countries, since they’re making the money in Romania, with Romanians,” Dragnea stated.

Dragnea suggested that big companies in sectors like retail, energy or telecommunications intentionally report low profits in Romania in order to avoid being taxed, adding that he wants the government to come up with fair rules to curb this approach.

“We can’t just sit back and watch our resources being taken away,” the PSD leader stated. “The government should no longer tolerate such behaviour and I’m asking for an urgent intervention. Meaning that in the sectors that we’ve spoken about before – in energy, gas, justice, gambling, where there’s now a profit tax, they have no profits, so look at their turnover,” he said.

Dragnea added that any country would expect its banking system to make a profit, but that it should also support the economy.

“If they were making profits while supporting the economy, it would have been fine, but if they aren’t, I say that every type of greed, in any field, should be weighted. I’m sure there are plenty of ways to introduce these measures,” he argued. “I think the government should take serious measures regarding banks’ greed and the ROBOR’s evolution. Because we’re in a situation where all of us are meekly watching how big banks are playing with each other and deciding what interest rates Romanians should pay.”
