The first free psychotherapy center in Romania, the “Together for Humanity” Social Psychotherapy Center, was officially opened in Bucharest, being fully functional to offer psychological support to adults, young people, and children from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds throughout the country. The center has 6 volunteer therapists currently, but their number will reach 30 in total soon, for psychological counseling both physically and online.

Opened by the Together for Humanity Association, the TFH Psychotherapy Social Center offers free individual and group psychotherapy services to people facing psycho-emotional problems, in financial difficulty. In the first days after opening, the center received 120 requests from vulnerable people from Bucharest and other localities in the country, for therapy in the center or online, but also 80 requests from psychologists and psychotherapists and 20 requests from people from different professional areas (UX/UI, directing/film, administration, secretarial), coming by filling out the Get involved now form, from people willing to get involved pro bono in the project.

“We did not expect such great interest, from the first hours after the opening, from the people and strong support from the community of psychologists and psychotherapists in Romania. Considering that the number of Romanians struggling with psycho-emotional problems is increasing, we wanted to create a fully equipped center, with professional services and a solid team of experts, just like any other private psychotherapy office, but which would ensure the necessary psychological consultations free of charge for the most vulnerable among us. According to the latest statistics, in Romania, 1 in 5 people is affected by mental health problems, and at least 250,000 Romanians suffer from a severe mental illness. Moreover, it is estimated that mental disorders will soon be the leading cause of morbidity, surpassing cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. And through the TFH Social Center for Psychotherapy, we aim to equally treat and prevent the intensification and occurrence of psycho-emotional damage for more and more Romanians, who do not have financial resources, given that the monthly cost for therapy can be 500-1,000 lei on average. We want to restore, restore, and increase the chances of promoting mental well-being in Romanian society. We imagine a society that prioritizes mental health, where stigma is eradicated and where everyone has access to therapy”, says Răzvan Popa, the initiator of the first free psychotherapy center in the country, founder, and president of the Together for Humanity Association.

300 people can receive counseling at the center from Monday to Saturday

Located in a central area of Bucharest (Strada Căderea Bastiliei, no. 17 – Piața Romană area), the first free psychotherapy center in Romania currently has a team of 30 volunteer psychotherapists and psychologists, including Diana Vasile, Maria Anghelina, Florinela Rațiu, Ioana Botez, Cele Stojceski – part of the organizing team, prepared to support therapy sessions for 300 people weekly, for psychological counseling both physically and online. The center has dedicated spaces for individual therapy sessions for adults, psycho-emotional development sessions for children, and group therapy sessions, being open from Monday to Friday between 9.00 and 18.00 and Saturday between 09.00 and 13.00.

A unique project in Romania, the first free psychotherapy center in the country required an investment of approximately 27,000 euros in the equipment of the therapy spaces, supported by the funds of the Together for Humanity Association and with the support of Exotique Interiors – Supplier of the Royal House of Romania, which ensured furnishing and setting up the entire center.

The center covers all areas of therapy for all ages, including depression, stress and anxiety, childhood trauma, domestic violence, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, child bullying, learning or adjustment issues at school, and any other psycho-emotional problems.

The next free psychotherapy center could be opened in Timișoara

“With the help of our team of specialists, we can treat complex cases. The idea of turning to a psychotherapist or psychologist is starting to become a normal thing in Romania as well, a habit for more and more people, increasing at high speed this acute need to solve problems through therapy. But unfortunately, the public health system does not even cover this need, leaving a huge gap in what represents such an important segment for us, the most vulnerable among us. For this reason, we want to open free psychotherapy centers in other cities in the country and we are considering that the next center will be in Timișoara soon”, says Răzvan Popa, the founder of the Social Center for Psychotherapy TFH.

For the continued support of the Social Psychotherapy Center and for the opening of new free centers in Romania, the association needs financial support and volunteers for a series of activities. Companies and individuals who want to get involved can make donations directly on the center’s website in the “Donate” section, by completing the Get Involved Now form, or they can remit their annual profit or income tax.
