The decision to establish the osteopathic center OsteobyGrosan was driven by the recognition of a significant gap in the market for alternative, holistic healthcare approaches. There was a growing demand for non-invasive, personalized therapies that address not just symptoms, but the underlying causes of ailments. This need was partially unmet in Romania, which motivated Mihai Groșan to provide a solution through osteopathy. Business Review sat down with him to find out more about his motivation and the results he achieved in the first two years since launching.

Please tell us about the establishment of OsteobyGrosan, what was the initial investment and when did you manage to break even?

The business was launched in 2021, and the initial investment covered the costs for the premises, equipment, marketing materials, and ongoing professional training. The amount invested was EUR 10.000. As to what concerns the break even, this was achieved in one year, indicating satisfactory progress in the business’s development.

How many patients has the clinic served since its opening and who are they in terms of age groups?

Since the opening of the clinic, I have seen over 450 patients. Each patient has unique needs, and each case is approached with tailored attention, contributing to the success and reputation of the office. The average age of patients visiting the clinic is 40 y.o., but the clinic’s services are sought by a wide range of ages, from children to seniors, each with specific health needs and issues.

What is the average cost of treatment?

The cost of a complete treatment varies depending on the patient’s specific condition and the number of sessions required. On average, a complete treatment can range from 300 to 3000 lei, offering patients a comprehensive approach that includes initial assessment, osteopathic treatments, and progress monitoring.

What is the current status of the osteopathy market in Romania and what are the biggest challenges it faces?

The osteopathy market in Romania is still in a growth phase. Annual turnover estimates are approximate, but it’s evident that the market is expanding as awareness and trust in osteopathy increase. Exact figures might vary, but the rising interest in osteopathy is clear. Among the main challenges are the reluctance and mistrust of certain population segments towards alternative therapies. Additionally, there’s some ignorance or lack of information about the benefits of osteopathy. These challenges are being overcome through education, transparency, and by delivering positive results to patients, who in their own turn become advocates for the benefits of osteopathy. Inflation has also been a challenge, and adjusting prices was necessary to reflect rising operational costs. These adjustments were made carefully to balance the need to keep the activity sustainable and the accessibility of services for patients.

Do you think Romanians have a higher interest in their health and wellbeing and what is the role of preventive medicine in this equation?

There’s an increasing interest among Romanians in their health and wellbeing, although this varies based on factors such as education level, access to information and financial resources. Generally, there’s a tendency to pay more attention to health, and osteopathy can play a significant role in this awareness and self-care process.

Healthcare costs can significantly increase if preventive checks, such as therapist visits, are not performed. If health issues are not identified and treated in their early stages, complications requiring more complex and costly treatments can arise. For example, an untreated minor back problem can develop into a herniated disc, necessitating surgical interventions and prolonged recovery, far exceeding the costs of a preventive check-up.
