MedLife, the largest network of private medical services in Romania, continues to strengthen its expertise in the field of robotic surgery with the acquisition of the da Vinci X robot at the MedLife Polisano Hospital in Sibiu, the third da Vinci robot in the group.

The investment of over 2 million euros in the new equipment represents another step by the operator to meet patients’ needs with innovative solutions that lead to an increase in the quality of treatments offered. The first robotic-assisted interventions at the MedLife Polisano hospital already took place on January 5th.

According to specialists, the da Vinci X robotic system is a combination of conventional laparoscopic technique and high-precision robotic technology. This complex system is an extension of the surgeon, which, thanks to its four multi-articulated arms and special technology, allows the real-time translation of the doctor’s instructions into movements of great finesse and precision, far superior to human movements.

Beyond the opportunities from the perspective of doctors, robotic surgery offers many more advantages to patients, especially compared to conventional surgical approaches. Interventions performed with the da Vinci X robot involve making very small incisions, with minimal aesthetic effects, and also reducing the risk of intraoperative complications, bleeding, or infections.

“The best care we can currently offer our patients is provided by the experience of good doctors, together with the latest technology. As the leader of the private medical market in Romania, we constantly invest in innovation, to ensure our patients medical services at the same standards as in Western European countries. With the acquisition of the third da Vinci robot, we continue to bring the advantages of robotic surgery closer to our patients and in the central area of the country. Moreover, this is another step we have taken with the aim of consolidating a high-performance medical hub in this region, after marking the opening of the first private centre in Transylvania with permanent outpatient and hospital services available 24/7 at the end of last year,” said Dr. Nicolae Marcu, Director of Health and Operations at MedLife Group.

Robotic surgery brings advantages in numerous surgical specialties The team at MedLife Polisano Hospital that will use the new da Vinci X system consists of 11 doctors, who will be able to perform complex interventions, covering several specialties: general surgery, oncological surgery, gynecological surgery, and urological surgery.

In oncological diseases, robotic technology plays an important role, especially in solving difficult cases determined by the anatomical particularities of certain areas (narrow, deep, inflexible spaces), cases that could not be treated through classical or laparoscopic surgery. An example is the robotic approach in colorectal cancer, where the main benefit lies in the preservation of pelvic nerves, which for the patient translates into minimizing urinary and sexual postoperative complications.

In the case of patients with gynecological conditions, there are multiple advantages of robotic surgery, which is used in uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or other types of genital cancer. With the help of the da Vinci X system, the doctor has access and visibility to perform very fine movements in deep areas of the pelvis through very small incisions, making it possible to millimetrically excise tumors.

Also, the da Vinci X system is ideal for urological interventions that require special rigor, such as cases of prostate, renal, and bladder tumors, malformations, or adenomas. The latest technology provides the surgeon with the control, precision, and safety to remove affected tissue without destroying nearby nerves and blood vessels.

The da Vinci system installed at the MedLife Polisano Hospital in Sibiu is supplied by SOFMEDICA.

“It is truly motivating to see how the MedLife Polisano Hospital in Sibiu integrates the da Vinci robotic surgery program into its medical practice. The adoption of this advanced surgical technology will amplify MedLife Polisano’s capacity to provide medical services to an increased number of patients, while facilitating the performance of complex surgical procedures with superior accuracy and efficiency. The major benefits of da Vinci robotic surgery include improved precision during surgical interventions, a significant reduction in recovery time for patients, and a reduction in the risks of postoperative complications, thus contributing to superior medical care and faster patient recovery,” says Evangelos Kalamakis, Managing Director, SOFMEDICA.

Currently, MedLife owns the largest and most complex network of private hospitals in Romania, with 17 hospital units in its portfolio, and continues its consolidation actions in this division, with plans to open the new Nord-Provita hospital in Bucharest, the MedLife Medici’s hospital in Timisoara, and a niche hospital in Craiova in the coming period.

All MedLife Group hospitals have the latest technology, the best at the national level among private operators. MedLife continues to plan new technology projects and investments in innovation, such as robotic surgery. At this time, MedLife hospitals have da Vinci robotic surgery systems in Bucharest (Life Memorial Hospital and Nord Provita) and Sibiu (MedLife Polisano), the Brainlab system, the most advanced robotic system in the world for spinal surgery, available nationally only at the MedLife Humanitas Hospital in Cluj, as well as neuronavigation systems, available in the Hospitals of the MedLife Group in Bucharest, Sibiu, and Cluj. Over 35 accredited doctors perform hundreds of complex surgical treatments annually through a robotic approach, in the safest conditions. MedLife also launched last autumn the first drone transport of biological samples in Central and Eastern Europe.
