Foreign tourists in Romania up 7.3 pct in Jan-May to 980,700; Germany, Israel and Italy are the main countries of origin

The number of foreign tourists in Romania rose by 7.3 percent year-on-year in the first five months of this year, to 980,680, due mainly to the growing interest of Asian, European and American tourists, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In 2017, the number of foreign tourists in Romania reached a record-level of 2.75 million, up 11.3 percent compared with 2016.

The foreign tourists in Romania came mainly from Europe (732,600, +5.8 percent y/y) in January-May, followed by Asia (139,100, +6.8 percent), North America (62,500, +8.1 percent), South America (8,300, +9.2 percent) and Africa (7,800, +2.6 percent).

By countries, the main sources of foreign tourists in Romania are Germany (109,132 tourists in January-May), Israel (94,327), Italy (91,608), France (60,393) and Hungary (58,841).

The number of Romanian tourists rose by 4.8 percent in the first five months of 2018, to 3.08 million.

The overnight stays, a key index for the tourism sector, increased by 3.7 percent year-on-year in the first five months, to 7.66 million.
