One in four books sold in the last 12 months by Libris, an online bookstore with a tradition on the Romanian market, was for children or a parenting book. The Children’s Book and Child Raising categories have steadily increased their share of sales on Libris.ro, reaching 25%, compared to about 15% 3 years ago. Therefore, with almost 30,000 volumes in Romanian and English listed on the site, children’s books are approaching the popularity of fiction, a sign that parents are increasingly concerned with nurturing in children an interest in reading.

Among the most ordered children’s books were well-known titles such as “Main Recreation” (Mircea Sântimbreanu), “Alone in the World” (Hector Malot), “Childhood Memories” (Ion Creangă), but also new titles such as be ” The Owl Who is Afraid of The Dark ” (Jill Tomlinson) or “500 Amazing and Funny Truths.”

The editorial offer addressed to children sums up titles in both Romanian and English, from almost 500 publishing houses. The top of the publishing houses with the most numerous titles on Libris.ro is led by Litera, followed by Didactica Publishing House, Art, Gama and Aramis.

Out of the total number of children’s books available on the bookstore’s website, over 12,000 titles are in Romanian (with immediate delivery from stock) and over 14,800 titles in English (with delivery in 3-5 weeks).

There is a vast need, of course, on the school’s bibliography, the sales charts speak for themselves. However, lately, we noticed that parents and schools with a more generous budget allocated to the book fund are oriented towards current titles and series appreciated by children. Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to NOT Reading, The Chronicles of Narnia, Warrior Cats, The Adventures of Dunno, Momilandia, 500 Amazing and Funny Truths, Pettson and Findus are examples of titles and volumes loved by children- said Laura Țeposu

At the same time, we continue to encourage reading among the little ones, with short-term and long-term strategies, special projects, and impact initiatives, such as the CarteTeca project, through which we have already equipped almost 150 school libraries with current titles, added Laura Țeposu.
