Solutions., with the support of Bayer, launched the report “SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN ROMANIA: approaches and directions for the future” – a synthesis of feasible solutions. The report is addressed to all those interested in the subject of sustainable agriculture and underlines the fact that in the context of increasingly pronounced climate changes, agricultural production and the future of food security are called into question.

Sustainable agriculture refers to agricultural practices that combine economic efficiency with environmental protection and social well-being. It respects natural resources, promotes biodiversity, uses environmentally friendly methods, and ensures current needs are met without compromising future resources. Going further, regenerative agriculture focuses on achieving outcomes such as improving soil quality, sequestering carbon from the atmosphere, conserving water resources, and improving the socio-economic well-being of farmers and their communities.

The future of agriculture will be built with today’s decisions and innovations. Future scenarios, trends and directions that we explore and build now will influence not only the way we grow our food, but also our relationship with nature and our responsibility towards future generations. At SOLUTIONS., we believe in an informed approach to a sustainable future. Shaping a favorable future requires a deep understanding of current challenges and innovation potential, that’s why we support companies in Romania and CEE with the strategic exploration of the future,” said Ciprian Stănescu, CEO Solutions.

The report was drawn up based on studies, analyzes and scientific articles relevant to the field of agriculture, as well on interviewing Romanian farmers who have adopted sustainable agricultural technologies and practices.

The need for farmers to embrace sustainability is paramount. As stewards of the land, farmers are in a unique position to address today’s challenges, from climate change to resource scarcity. And sustainable practices not only protect the environment, but improve the resilience and long-term viability of farm operations. This sustainability report is proof of our shared vision of a more sustainable and regenerative agricultural future here in Romania,” said Boualem Saidi, Senior Bayer Representative & Crop Science Division Head Romania, Bulgaria and Republic of Moldova.

Interviews conducted with Romanian farmers show that the main challenges faced by them are unpredictable climatic fluctuations and temperature changes, as well as uneven distribution of precipitation, which influenced crop yields. In addition, adapting the workforce to new technologies was another problem that farmers encountered.

Faced with all these obstacles, farmers have consistently adopted several innovative solutions. They paid more attention to soil health and efficient management of available water. Technology has played a key role: precision farming, satellite monitoring and the use of NDVI maps have proven to be crucial tools in identifying the needs of the soil and the crops developed from year to year. To cope with climate variations, farmers have tested and selected more resistant plant varieties. Sustainable agricultural practices, such as conservation tillage (min-till, no-till or strip-till), have been successfully integrated, along with optimizing the use of inputs.

Sustainability is only a concept if you fail to create a culture around it. I’m extremely proud to say that in our organization, everyone is dedicated to acting for the benefit of the environment and the community, and looking for opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint. All actions are measured, tracked and integrated into our strategy to ensure we are moving at the right pace on our journey towards sustainability,” said Rémi Dei-Tos, Row Crop Seeds Production Lead Bayer Romania.

The report “SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN ROMANIA: approaches and directions for the future” is an invitation to action and reflection, a challenge to look to the future with confidence, having the conviction that, together, we can shape a sustainable and prosperous route for Romanian agriculture.

“The future of food in the context of demographic growth and climate change will depend on adaptability, innovation and cooperation at the global level. Sustainable agriculture is a long-term commitment that concerns us all. Today, we have a unique opportunity to shape the agriculture of the future, to make it more efficient, more sustainable and more responsible,” added Alexandra Moraru, Research Lead Solutions.
