Lucian Baltaru, CEO at Sameday Courier, is set to return as a speaker at Business Review’s re:FOCUS on eCommerce, Retail & Logistics 2023 after also featuring at the previous edition in 2022. He will be part of the first panel of the day, titled “The Future of Retail & eCommerce.” In a preview of the conference, Lucian Baltaru answered our questions about the Romanian courier market.
How did the Romanian courier market evolve in 2022 and what were the main trends in this market last year?
Sameday is a courier company that mainly delivers online shopping orders, thus its ecosystem is closely related to the dynamics of e-commerce. Eventhough the online shopping trend seemed to decrease at the beginning of 2022, the pace picked back up after the first half of the year, which implicitly led to an uplift in requests for deliveries. As history proves it, our business peaks are in November and December, starting with Black Friday leading up to the holidays. All in all, 2022 was a good year, which ended on a business high for us.
What were the biggest challenges you faced last year?
The unpredictable market circumstances challenged the status quo. This impacted our entire industry. Two years of pandemic restrictions and then the armed conflict on Romania’s border changed consumption habits with significant volatility. We increased our adaptability to the business environment which we were entirely thrusted into. 2022 was a year of investments, a strategy that is usually applied in more predictable market conditions, which we lacked in the last months.
What can you tell us about Sameday Courier’s main achievements in 2022?
The previous year we relied heavily on the company’s technological development. In 2022, we launched services that facilitated the interaction between the courier and the end customer, through the Interactive Delivery Management application, and we increased our parcel management capacity, while also expanding the easybox network that counts today more than 3700 lockers in Romania alone. Yet the most important achievement of the year remains the expansion into Bulgaria. The international market was first tackled by Sameday in 2020, when we launched our services in Hungary but this was only the beginning. At the moment, we are counting approximately 800 easybox lockers placed outside Romania’s borders, in Hungary and Bulgaria.
What are your goals for this year?
In 2023, the focus remains on our customer and his needs, so the company is working on large scale projects to improve the experience we are offering end-to-end, from order confirmation to package pickup. The two aces up our sleeves are accepting and applying the feedback we are given, complemented by our openness to new technologies.
Technology is the word that will dominate Sameday’s activity this year ahead since innovation through numerous digital projects is part of the company’s DNA to make our courier services more efficient.
