The museum contains a group of French paintings, including works by Delacroix, Corot, Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, Bonnard, Utrillo, Marquet, Laprade and Campigli. The works in the Zambaccian museum collection include top works by artists such as Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Stefan Luchian, Theodor Pallady and Nicolae Tonitza.
Collector and art critic Krikor H. Zambaccian, who lived between 1889 and 1962, amassed an art collection in Romania which comprised paintings, sculptures, graphics and furniture. The art critic gave away this collection to the Romanian state. The donation also included the house where he lived.
