From October 18 to October 22, British Council hosts Discovery Week, a whole week of events meant to create favorable contexts for those with sensorial disabilities. Each of the five days will have its own theme. Thus, on Monday, the focus will be on music, dance and fashion, on Tuesday, crafts, through an exhibit of handmade objects, on Wednesday, literature, on Thursday, sports, on Friday, games. The full schedule of the week is available here.
Discovery Week was created by British Council in collaboration with Light into Europe Foundation, with two purposes. First of all, through the activities developed this week, people with sensorial disabilities will take part in activities ranging from dance, music, fashion, games to writing. Second of all, those unaffected by such disabilities will learn more about what it feels like to live with visual or hearing difficulties and how they might aid their peers found in such situations.
UPDATE: Starting October 18, British Council has announced that people with disabilities (mental, physical or sensorial) have the possibility of making free subscriptions at the library. British Council employees hold basic sign language knowledge and the library already holds a collection of materials dedicated to those visually or aurally impaired. What’s more, during Discovery Week, the library also holds a small collection of books in the Braille alphabet, courtesy of Light into Europe Foundation.
